snake gourd poetry collection

preface

This is a collection of poems by us (nickname:Okaki to Yokan, abbrebated as OK,YK from now on) have been writing since the end of 1994, instead of a diary.

We mainly write tanka (thirty-one syllabled verse), but we also write

haiku (a Japanese poem of seventeen sylalables[in 5-7-5]), senryu (seventeen-syllable poem which is often satirical of the times), which

is any genre not specified.

By the way, the most difficult thing in summarizing for me to figure out was

 how to classify them.

I took it for granted that if I made it into a book, it would be categorized

and have a table of contents.

However, I have been writing poems simply to write down what I felt and what was left in my mind in my daily life. The subject and theme of poems are

divergent and not coherent.

So, on second thought, since it was originally intended as a diary, the date

of its creation has a great significance, so I decided to post it in

chronological order without categorizing it.

However, that alone seemed to be inconvenient for the search, so I decided to insert the major event of each period as the subtitle at the head of it.

Now, if you read some of these poems, youll understand the differences in skill soon.

OK was a member of a tanka club for a while, and  some of poems written at that time are included, but the YK’s are completely self-made.

We dont  have enough confidence in ourselves to put out a good poem and

be recognized.

However we thought that it would be great if some of our readers who live in the same era as us could sympathize with these poems, then well post it here.

I made about 30 copies of this collection of poems as private bindings five years ago using a personal computer at home, and gave them away to my acquaintances, which has been partially revised for the website, such as changing the writing style from vertical to horizontal

The “Foreword”and “Afterword”are not dated differently from the original,

but they have been modified to target an unspecified readers due to the

nature of the website.

Additionally, in order to correspond to the table of contents, each poem is numbered consistently in the order in which it appears in the book, and the number is shown after the poem.

postface

As I mentioned in the preface, this collection of poems that we have

created in order to write down the things that have remained in our hearts and feelings in our daily lives.

After rereading it, Im glad I made it after a fashion. Peoples memories tend

to change and disappear quickly.

We believe that our past experiences are proof that we have lived, and that

they will lead us to tomorrow.

Although we are concerned about the skill of the poem, we created this poem

with the sole intention of expressing our thoughts obediently while adhering

to the traditional form of poetry.

I know that there are many techniques and knowledge that can be gained by

studying, but I am naturally lazy, so I continue to do things in my own way

in order to avoid imitating others and to keep things fresh.

In any piece of literature, there must first be the authors own emotions

and thoughts, and then you need the desire to express them through the written words.

Also, even if the work is personal in nature, if the personal emotions and thoughts are expressed frankly, the reader will understand how they feel them.

I think it is the same in the realm of poetry.

In other words, if the author is not moved, or if the expression exists

for the sake of the author, it will not be understood by the readers.

The same is true whether you are a famous poet or a landlord.

And again, I dont think we should criticize anything about the quality of

the emotion.

This is because I believe that there is not much difference between

human beings as a whole in terms of physical functioning, and in terms

of mentality, identity is fundamental and individual differences are minimal.

Thats why I tried to express my emotions honestly, even though Im not

very good at it.

And we hope that our emotions and thoughts will be shared by our readers,

even if only a little.
